  • Problem to add a Finnish- English dictionary

Okay! One more report, when I use lookupper to look up word in Supermemo, and it seems like it couldn't work well.(Supermemo: a software like anki, you can use it to read and make card and this software has 30+ years history, so occuring this issue may not suprise) I don't know this is supermemo's problem or lookupper occured some issue. At first, it work very well, but later its result become very different, like from one word jump into another one. For example, in the first page, when the software loading the word, the translator work well. And in the second and third one, when the loading done, every things different, I don't know why it happen. Also, if I don't use it in Supermemo, everything is okay, it work perfectly.


Another thing I want to talk about is the page of the anki export. It done a good job, but if I already export some words and after that I look up some different words, now the page of saved word would have two sort of word, old words that I have exported and new words that I haven't exported. And this two sorts of words just mixed together and if now I export the saved words, it would have the old words and the new words. That's fine if I add it to anki because anki could recognise which one is new and old, but what if my saved words have 1000 or even more words? The export time would be very long. (Maybe you already have the optimisation for it, just I didn't know) What if someone need to learn two language, like me, the exported deck would be the same, which mean I only have one deck. For example, I use the setting as below to search Finnish, and the word would be the same deck with English word, maybe this issue just only because lookupper didn't have a English-Finnish dictionary but magically could use English to search Finnish. But if I can make a time sort or like I can sort it by whatever I like and export the word only I want or selected. More clearly, could use dictionary (or language), time, a button which could select words or so on, which aim to selective export, lookupper would be better. (beside, now it's also a great software) These are small problems, not like a big issue, but improving it could make using experience better.

    Thanks for the detailed report with screenshots. It’s definitely a bug, so if you have time, could you please answer a few questions so I can investigate further.

    1. The first issue is that Lookupper correctly highlights the word in yellow, but the Lookupper Dictionary gives a definition for a different word. Does this bug occur only with the Lookupper Dictionary, or does it happen with other dictionaries too (like the Translator)?
    2. The second issue seems to be related to:
      a) Exporting words to Anki takes too much time.
      b) You’ve encountered, or are concerned about, English and Finnish words being exported into one deck.

    Regarding the export, if you mix Finnish and English words, you should get an Anki deck with two separate collections: one for English and one for Finnish. This is by design. If you’re not seeing that, then it’s a bug. Additionally, to help Lookupper more easily detect the language, you should set the Source text language to Finnish in the settings when looking up Finnish words, and to English when looking up English words. Yes, I know it’s not ideal, and I’m working on a solution to automatically detect the source language. Could you please try exporting an Anki deck with both English and Finnish words and let me know what result you get?

    Please also check if you have the latest version of Lookupper from the Microsoft Store.

        The Translator mean the other software? If so, I used eudic to look up the before, and when you use it , you need to copy the word first and eudic will display the translation or dictionary. It work fairly good, but can't export to anki

        If it mean the Translator in the lookupper, it works well, it recognice the word, but the lookupper dictionary jump into another word.

        So now I use lookupper in Supermemo several times, and the Lookupper had 80% roughly to look up the word correctly, and some word that I look up it would make it wrong again and again in Supermemo, but if I copy the word to other place, it work perfectly.

        a), For now exporting time is all right, just mention that maybe it could be a problem later.

        b), I already find that the English and Finnish words being exported into one deck. But that because if I use Finnish for the Source text language, the lookupper dictionary would display in Finnish, though the translator is in English, so like I say, If I use English for the Source text language, it would be better for looking up the Finnish word, bcause the the dictionary would display in English. But all of this may just because it don't have a English- Finnish dictionary.

        Also, like you say, the export in the same deck with two language may be a bug. like the picture below, it do have two deck, but just because the source text language is different, not bcasic on the word's language that detected. And my lookupper is the latest version (1.2.8, I think).

              leuas Hi, Leuas. I downloaded SuperMemo 18 and tried using Lookupper with it without purchasing, but I didn’t encounter any issues. Could you please share your app version and the reading material you’re using so I can reproduce your setup and identify the bug?

                Okay, but epub file is not allowed to upload, so maybe you could download from here, I don't sure if it has any difference with mine. Maybe no.I also download my book from this website, but I can't find the one that I downloaded, though I think the version(2017) is the same.

                And in the "5 Writing Is the Only Thing That Matters", the first paragraph, "compartmentalised" would always translate wrong.If I copy it to other place, the error won't happen.

                And I don't know if my import way will cause this issue, I'm using quicker's a kind of extension to import the whole book, bcause if I just copy the text, the picutre of the book will disappear in the Supermemo. And it seems like quicker only have Chinese version,I'm sorry about that. I only know that it use pandoc and autohotkey to run and it saved picture by relative path.

                  leuas I finally found what causes this bug and will include a fix in the next Lookupper update. This wouldn’t have been possible without you—thank you.

                    I don't know if it's a bug, the lookupper dictionary is correct, but the Translator is wrong.

                    By the way, could you please tell me the date of next update release roughly? Would it be more precise if lookupper have a English-Finnish dictionary when use to translate finnish?

                      leuas It’s kind of a bug, but in most cases, the translator can successfully extract the target word from the translation. In your example, the word “channel” isn’t present in the translation, which causes the translator to get confused and unable to determine what to extract. That’s why it ends up the way it does. However, in 99% of cases, everything works fine, so there’s no need to fix it for now.

                      I’m planning to release a minor update for Lookupper this week or next. I’ve added a Finnish-English offline dictionary. Unfortunately, it might not fully meet your expectations since it doesn’t have as many words as other, more established dictionaries.
